Cavan’s Kildallan GWS has almost completed its programme of replacing its old analog domestic meters with digital, remote-read meters.
The task of fitting the meters was completed by December 2023 and the GWS has spent the last three months fitting “gateways” (little antennae) at specific locations around the network to pick up the signals being transmitted from the meters.
Due to the difficult topography of the west Cavan drumlins, combined with forestry plantations on said drumlins, some extra “gateways” were needed. As the remote-read system gains in popularity among other users, the combined network of “gateways” will help all users piggyback off each other, much like the mobile phone mast systems.
Member participation
Any black spots are being steadily eliminated, thanks to the willing participants within the network, allowing the GWS access to their high buildings and structures. At present, approximately 75% of the meters are being picked up by the antenna and there is a commitment from all parties involved to reach 100%.
It may be the first GWS to use this system, and teething problems are inevitable, but the GWS will gladly share all information and experiences as the project progresses.
Trialing period
Technology training is next on the agenda, to ensure the billing system is compatible with the collected data. The intention is to trial a few dry runs before billing commences, to help avoid any surprises, but if any GWS would like further details, please get in touch with Kidallan GWS through your local NFGWS development officer.
