Final Report on Source Protection Mitigation Actions Project

The NFGWS has completed a ground-breaking source protection project, thanks to funding from the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage; and the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine.

The project, which ran from 2021-2023, demonstrates the value of a joined-up, inter-departmental approach to land and landscape management. It has seen the creation of 13 GWS integrated source protection plans (ISPPs), the completion of extensive physical mitigation works by 30 farmers on six GWSs, and further engagement from countless GWS members.

With the help of funding from the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage (DHLGH), the NFGWS liaised with external consultants, who completed scientifically-based, group water scheme specific ISPPs that detail targeted actions that can reverse or avert pollution in a drinking water source catchment/zone of contribution.

The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine provided €500,000 of funding to complete extensive mitigation works on six group water schemes, comprising a mixture of on-farm measures and wide-reaching education and awareness raising initiatives.

A full report on the mitigation actions element of the project has been published by the NFGWS and is available to download here.
