As part of World Water Day 2023 celebrations on the 22nd March, the National Federation of Group Water Schemes published its final report on phase II of its Drinking Water Source Protection Pilot Project.

Funded by the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage (DHLGH) under the Multi-Annual Rural Water Programme 2019—2021, phase II of the pilot project aimed to further develop the source protection planning process for the group water scheme (GWS) sector and included the implementation of a large number of mitigation actions on GWSs in County Roscommon and Stranooden GWS, County Monaghan.

Through its overarching steering group and operational groups, the project brought together like-minded organisations to assist in creating a practical, scientifically grounded process to help bring about improvements in the quality of drinking water sources. The report gives an overview of the development of this process, the project's key achievements and recommendations for the sector going forward.

During its lifetime, the project's 'Let it Bee' initiative was awarded the European Landowners' Organisation's European Bee Award while the overall project was finalist in the European Co-operative Awards 2021.
