Meath Hill Group Water Scheme which proudly serves over 370 households and businesses in the local community, continues to shine in the annual Group Water Scheme Excellence Awards.

Over recent years, the scheme has consistently demonstrated its commitment to best practice by entering a variety of award categories and being recognised among the best in the country. An excellence flag recipient in Water Safety Planning and Quality Assurance this year, its standout achievement came in September 2024, when Meath Hill GWS was awarded the top prize in the Water Demand Management and Climate Action category. This recognition reflects the scheme’s proactive and results-driven approach to water conservation and environmental stewardship. In just two years, the scheme had reduced its unaccounted for Water (UFW) from approximately 35% in 2022 to 25% at time of application, a significant improvement.

This was achieved through targeted leak detection, addressing meter malfunctions, and identifying historic issues, such as unaccounted-for connections. While bulk meters were already in place on all watermain lines, the scheme has gone a step further by installing additional meters on various offshoots. These efforts not only reduce water loss but also contribute to lower pumping costs and a reduced environmental footprint.

Community Engagement

Community engagement has been central to Meath Hill GWS’s success. With an active and enthusiastic board, staff, and volunteers, the scheme regularly visits local schools to promote water conservation both at home and on the farm. These outreach efforts have increased public awareness of the scheme’s work and led to a rise in community-reported leaks, allowing for quicker response times and further water savings.

Digital communication has also played a key role. Through Facebook and other online platforms, the scheme keeps members informed in real time about essential updates such as flushing schedules and frost warnings. Meath Hill GWS also participated in the BECA (Biodiversity Enhancement and Climate Action) Project. The board has pushed ahead with efforts, such as completing a full energy audit and undertaking initiatives such as source protection fencing and local septic tank desludging. These actions further demonstrate the scheme’s commitment to sustainability and climate resilience.

Value of Awards

While some may question the value of awards, the visibility and recognition they bring to local schemes like Meath Hill GWS are invaluable. They celebrate the dedication of volunteers and staff and inspire continued progress. Local media, such as the Meath Chronicle, has published images and stories of the scheme's positive work and the scheme has a much more prominent presence now offering support to all it's members. School visits such as the one at St. Brigids NS and interaction with local groups has enhanced engagement and the community connection.

Reflecting on the award win, committee member Tom Lynch shared:

Winning the award in the Water Demand Management and Climate Action category was a great achievement for Meath Hill Group Water Scheme. It lifted the spirits of the entire committee and the wider community, who responded positively to the recognition. It has inspired us to continue our efforts and strive for even greater improvements.

Pupils of St. Brigids NS all wanting to share in the glory of the GWS Excellence Award win as part of the scheme's community engagement.

Meath Hill Group Water Scheme is a shining example of how innovation, community spirit, and environmental responsibility can come together to deliver exceptional service and long-term sustainability.
